I used to use IDLE before I picked up emacs… that was pretty good (except on a mac, it’s TOTALLY BORKED on mac)
Some people like using Eclipse for python … but screw Eclipse it just encourages people to write spaghetti code.

I’ve also heard of some success integrating with IPython http://ipython.scipy.org/moin/Cookbook/IPythonEmacs23?highlight=%28emacs%29

I got this up and running without any headaches. Let me know if you come up with or stumble across any useful extensions.
