Indeed, it’s not really clear to me that operating systems is a valid academic field at all. If someone had axed its funding (the dirtiest word in the English language has seven letters and starts with “F”) in 1980, how different would your computer be? Bear in mind: someone would also have a few billion dollars to spend on something else.
