Never Let Me Go
by JS
I just read that Hollywood is making a movie based on the novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. This is my second favorite novel of all time, second only to One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I haven’t read either again, for fear of stomping over the memory of reading them the first time. Where Marquez delves into the fantastical to show us something real about ourselves, Ishiguro shows us something fantastic by dwelling on the real.

Those are my two favorites, too!
What do you think of them making a movie out of Never Let Me Go?
I tried reading “One Hundred Years of Solitude” three times and never could get into it. I tried it twice in Spanish and once in English, and each time I put it down about half way through. I must have a faulty Marquez gene.
I’d imagine that the movie would be a dream for actors. The entire story is about nuance. It would also be a challenge to adapt/direct given the delicate process of realization that makes the entire plot arc work. I think the chance that the movie will be successful artistically or commercially is narrow, but if it is it will probably end up being amazing.
I first read “One Hundred Years of Solitude” about 7 years back. I re-read it two years back, and enjoyed it even more. It is one of those books that reveals more layers as one gets older.
