On Green

Democrats might not be a bunch of tree hugging commie hippie fuckups. They may actually have policy foresight, the kind that, you know, tries to do the right thing. I’m not exactly the Greenpeace type. If I knew for sure that humanity would benefit, I’d pave the planet. But what I do know is how bad people are at assessing risk in the presence of uncertainty, and I think many arguments in favor of traditional environmental goals fall into that category.
That’s why it irks me so when somebody so obviously not aligned with a movement tries to co-opt its message. Pickens hasn’t seen the light. He doesn’t know the future. The dynamic he describes – dependence on foreign oil – isn’t new. It’s been a primary dynamic in play since the energy crisis. It is the reason he is rich.
So what’s the deal? What’s changed? Wikipedia knows. Nothing is worse than people who are already billionaires making craven plays for further wealth – especially when they try to trample on property rights in the process. Despicable.
