Hypothetical

Interesting how already entrenched institutions appear through the lens of modern special interests. Sometimes we forget that copyright is an entirely artificial (limited term) monopoly whose purpose is to grant incentives for certain social and culturally valuable endeavors.
Of course we know from experience the value of libraries, but would we be able to predict that value in advance? Would the idea of a library survive the kind of special interest attacks that have led to a trampling of fair use and indefinite copyright terms?
